Ashgrove Golf Club is proud to announce that it has become an official signatory to the R&A Women in Golf Charter, joining a growing number of golf clubs across Australia committed to making golf more welcoming, inclusive and accessible for women and girls.

The Charter is a global initiative led by the R&A and supported in Australia by Golf Australia. It encourages clubs to take meaningful, measurable action to increase female participation, create leadership opportunities, and foster environments where women and girls feel welcomed, valued and empowered – whether as players, volunteers, employees or leaders.

For Ashgrove Golf Club, becoming a signatory is far more than receiving a certificate. It represents an ongoing commitment to creating an environment where everyone has the opportunity to discover and enjoy the game of golf.

Women’s President Sue Ledlie said the Charter reflects the Club’s commitment to ensuring golf is a sport that is accessible, enjoyable and welcoming for all.

“This is an exciting milestone for Ashgrove Golf Club and one that reflects the work already being undertaken to encourage more women into the game,” Ms Ledlie said.

“The Charter isn’t about meeting a checklist – it’s about continually looking for ways we can improve. Whether someone is picking up a golf club for the very first time or has been playing for decades, we want every woman to feel supported, included and part of our club community.”

Over recent years, Ashgrove Golf Club has introduced a range of initiatives designed to encourage female participation. These include beginner golf clinics, supervised practice sessions, flexible playing opportunities, stronger pathways into membership, and programs specifically designed to build confidence for those new to the game.

Working closely with Golf Australia, the Club has also developed a comprehensive Action Plan that will guide future initiatives. The plan focuses on practical outcomes such as increasing female participation, encouraging women into leadership roles, supporting volunteers, strengthening communication and ensuring women are represented across all aspects of Club life.

Research has consistently shown that diverse and inclusive sporting organisations foster stronger governance, healthier club cultures and greater long-term sustainability.
