International Repair Day
Repair Cafe The Gap – on Saturday, 19 October
“Repair is for everyone!”
If you have a broken appliance or clock that needs repairing or clothing that needs mending, why don’t you come down to Repair Café The Gap on Saturday 19th October to see if they can be fixed.
Repairing not only helps reduce waste going into landfill, but it also helps us save money (by not having to replace our broken things). Repair Cafés also offer a wonderful opportunity to strengthen our communities through a place-based activity that brings members of our community together to share their knowledge and repair skills.
Repair Cafés are a worldwide movement and there are now over 3000 Repair Cafés around the world. Repair Café international provides some information and resources about Repair Cafés as well as an international map showing where they all are.

Our Repair Café movement in Australia is doing a great job in raising awareness of the importance of repairing the things we own. Australia has more than 110 Repair Cafés that operate in our communities.
In and around Brisbane, we have about 14 Repair Cafés that are operating on different weekends. You can find out more about Australia’s Repair movement and find all of our Repair Cafés on our map on our Australian Repair Network website.
The Australian Repair Network represents a wide range of stakeholders who are advocating for Australians to have a Right to Repair.
If we gain the Right to Repair, we could expect new products to be able to be repaired, expect to be able to repair products anywhere- not just at manufacturer centres. This would save us all money and diver significant volumes of waste from landfill.
If we return to the old ways of repairing rather than throwing out our products, we would also trigger a rebirth of repair-based businesses, employment growth and up-skilling.

Since the first Repair Café opened in Sydney in 2014, Australian Repair Cafés have expanded in number and popularity. More and more Australians are realising the importance and value of community place-based activities that help not only to save money and provide a venue for knowledge and skills exchange but importantly strengthen communities.
Repair Cafe The Gap, which has a new venue at the Rivercity Church basement, 59 Settlement Rd, The Gap pops up on the third Saturday of the month.
They invite you to bring your broken household items along and their amazing volunteer repairers will help you fix them!
Councillor Steve Toomey will be helping to launch some special Internation Repair Day activities at Repair Café The Gap – stay tuned on their Facebook site for more details.
