It’s Debatable – A Youth Perspective

Rise and Grind: Is Hustle Culture Here to Replace Corporate Culture

“Escape the matrix” has become an easy catchcry. Build a business! Skip the whole university thing! Start an online side hustle and make ten grand a month!

A friend of mine summed up this mentality perfectly. “I don’t know what I want to do, Leonard. I just know I want to do something. Some kind of business, you know, proper money stuff online. Live in Thailand maybe. That’s got to be better than going into business.”

For so many young people, that’s exactly the thought process. They want to start a business, not be in business. Be the owner, not the worker. But when they look at their middle-class, two-income parents, they know for sure that what they have isn’t enough.

Working overtime to impress the boss, building a resume over twenty years – that’s their personal hell.

We only get one life!

But what does that actually mean? Is everyone racing to escape the corporate rat race simply bolting down some new sewer as fast as they can?

What makes hustle culture such a fascinating case study is that it still wants all the trappings of corporate life. The young man watching “a day in the life of a founder” videos wants the nice car, the fancy events, the prestige and financial freedom.

He’s just determined to take a different road to get there. And too often, we’re quick to judge people for wanting a good life and working towards it in an unconventional way.

Yet most young people chasing this dream never actually take action. They say the right words, watch the right videos, and the sharper ones will even read the right books. But that’s where so many promising entrepreneurial journeys quietly end. Because success requires action.

If you want to escape the matrix, you’d better be prepared to fight your way out.

Your life is a deeply personal thing, and satisfaction has to be found within it, whichever path you take. When the young hustler spends twenty years stressing about work and obsessing over money, they might one day wake up in horror to find they’ve become the very thing they set out to avoid.

Freedom is always the goal. If entrepreneurship and side hustles are your path to it, go for it. Same goes if you’d rather be a hotshot lawyer or a top business manager.

Young people are craving financial freedom in their futures… just don’t let your pursuit of it keep you bound in the here and now.
